Juraj Valuha To Conduct NY Philharmonic With Concertmaster Frank Huang As Soloist

Juraj Val?uha will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct a program of works from the first half of the 20th century: Barber's Violin Concerto with Concertmaster Frank Huang as soloist, Korngold's Much Ado About Nothing Suite, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. The concerts will take place Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, November 3 at 8:00 p.m.

American composer Samuel Barber wrote his Violin Concerto in 1939, beginning it in Switzerland and completing it in the United States due to the onset of World War II. Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his Symphonic Dances in 1940 while living in New York, to which he had returned at the outbreak of World War II. Austrian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold began his Much Ado About Nothing Suite in Vienna in 1918; he moved to the US in 1934 and remained there until after the end of World War II.

The New York Times wrote of Concertmaster Frank Huang's concerto appearance with the Philharmonic in November 2017: "As he has before, he showed full virtuosic command and a willingness to take risks. All the while, he seemed to be reveling in the moment, and he brought down the house, winning a clamorous ovation from his colleagues and the audience." In its review of Juraj Val?uha's 2012 Philharmonic debut, The New York Times wrote that "Mr. Val?uha was an alert accompanist .... throughout the program, Mr. Valcuha was intensely attuned to matters of balance, dynamics and timbre."

Single tickets start at $34. (Ticket prices subject to change.) Tickets to Open Rehearsals are $22. A limited number of $18 tickets for select concerts may be available for students within 10 days of the performance at nyphil.org/rush, or in person the day of; valid identification is required.

Tickets may be purchased online at nyphil.org or by calling (212) 875-5656, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Tickets may also be purchased at the David Geffen Hall Box Office. The Box Office opens at 10:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. On performance evenings, the Box Office closes one-half hour after performance time; other evenings it closes at 6:00 p.m.
