Joyce Theatre Stagehands Ask Local One IATSE to Represent Them; Union Requests Voluntary Recognition
Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) has requested voluntary recognition from the Joyce Theatre Foundation as the collective bargaining representative of the stagehands employed at the Joyce Theatre.
A vast majority of the stagehands employed by the Joyce recently signed authorization cards selecting Local One to bargain collectively on its behalf.
In a letter daTed August 14, President James J. Claffey, Jr., citing the Joyce stagehands' decision to sign with the 3000-member Local One, offered to the Joyce that it select a neutral, third party to review the signed authorization cards.
"It is our firm belief that resolving the representation rights of the stagehands through voluntary recognition promotes constructive and harmonious relations between the Joyce Theatre and Local One," Mr. Claffey wrote to Joyce Theatre Foundation Executive Director Linda Sheldon. Mr. Claffey requested that the review be completed by August 26.
Voluntary recognition allows both Local One and the Joyce Theatre Foundation to avoid the hefty expenses associated with National Labor Relations Board election procedures.
For 123 years, Local One < www.iatselocalone.org> has been the premiere stagecraft union of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees representing 3,000 property persons, stage and studio electricians, set carpenters, sound designers, audio technicians, moving-light operators, riggers and special effects people in New York.
