Joe's Pub at The Public Theater (425 Lafayette St.) announces performances from June 10th to the 14th. The week includes performances from Sunny Jain, Andy Friedman & Jim Avett, Maria Gadú and other.. Ticket prices range from $12 to $25.

The Losers Lounge returns with the sounds of summer: a brand new tribute show to Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys with all of the incredible songs, great performances, irreverent antics and special guests that you can only find at The Losers Lounge. For one weekend only, only at Joe's Pub. Tickets are $25.

SUNNY JAIN: TABOO CD RELEASE: June 10th at 10:00 PM

Percussionist Sunny Jain celebrates the release of Taboo, an album of new jazz works inspired by ghazals (ancient poetic form), addressing social justice issues and the juxtaposition of religions. Sunny Jain is a lead voice in an emerging movement of South Asian-American jazz musicians who bring together America's greatest original art form and the ancient sounds of their cultural heritage. Touted as an Indian-American trailblazer in establishing the contemporary music of Indo-Jazz, Sunny Jain has released 5 CD's since 2002 that have received international acclaim for them.

Unlike most Indo-Jazz ensembles, Sunny draws inspiration from the musical sensibilities of modern India in addition to ancient classical forms. Jain's Punjabi roots and appreciation for Bollywood classics are audible in the work. Allusions to Indian dance rhythms find resonance with ragtime, swing, and the syncopated jazz canon in the group's performances.Tickets are $15.

 

SING ME TO SLEEP CD RELEASE & BENEFIT feat. TANYA DONELLY, JENNY OWEN YOUNGS, & JULIE PEEL: June 13th at Noon

American Laundromat Records proudly presents Tanya Donelly (Belly, Breeders, Throwing Muses), Jenny Owen Youngs, and Julie Peel celebrating the release of Sing Me To Sleep - Indie Lullabies, a whimsical collection of lullabies and popular songs re-imagined as lullabies by some of today's best indie artists. This is an all-ages kids-friendly event with live performances, face-painting, balloons, crafts and lots of fun for all ages. All proceeds from this wonderful project are donated to The Valerie Fund, a non-profit organization that provides for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children under 12.

 

ANDY FRIEDMAN & JIM AVETT: June 13th at 7:00 PM

Andy Friedman moonlights as a cartoonist for, most notably, The New Yorker, but the songs written by "hard scrabble singer-songwriter" and "erudite redneck" aren't written for laughs. Nicknamed the "Hillbilly Leonard Cohen" and "The King of Art Country," Friedman is the embodiment of original Brooklyn country songwriting, presenting "fractured folk songs" that explore issues of art, wild dreams, and wanderlust, while celebrating "those who wash down life's knuckle sandwiches with ice-cold despair." In January of 2009, Friedman released his sophomore studio album, Weary Things, to widespread critical praise.

Jim Avett is a retired welder, but not only a welder of course. He, like any man, is more than his career, more than his working business. He is a farmer. He is an ex-psychology professor. He is a husband of forty years and a father of thirty-five. From 1967 to 1971, he served in the United States Navy. Oh yes, he sings and picks the guitar as well. With this record, he has done so with his family in mind, so that his children's children and so on will have a way to know a little of who he is, who he was. Perhaps fittingly, it is by his own children's encouragement that it is now available to the general public. For all of what he is, this collection of tunes is a glimpse into his sentiment and history; the son of a preacher and a pianist, who as a boy, sat in the pews and heard not only his father's sermons, but these songs as well. Now, he has sung them with the tape rolling, as honest and rough-cut as it gets, and anyone may listen. Tickets are $15.

 

MARIA GADÚ: June 13th at 9:30 PM

Things are going very fast for Brazilian singer/songwriter Maria Gadú. Within nine months of releasing her self-titled debut album, the 22-year-old was chosen "Best New Artist" in the 2009 Brazilian Popular Music Awards. Last November she opened for Joss Stone at the HSBC Arena in Rio. In January recorded a duet with Singer/songwriter Eagle-Eye Cherry that should hit the airwaves within the next months. Not to mention the appraisals from the critics and from artist with the caliber of Milton Nascimento, João Donato and Caetano Veloso. With all this hype surrounding her, it becomes almost easy to understand the phenomenon that took the public by storm and managed her to get a platinum record in Brazil, with more than 125,000 copies of the album sold to date. Maria Gadú is now on the road, hitting the stage about 12 times per month, crossing Brazil from North to South. In 2010, she will take the road outside of her home country with confirmed gigs in the U.S. and Europe. Tickets are $17.

 

SALLY SELTMANN: June 14th at 7:00 PM

Previously best known as New Buffalo, Sally Seltmann is the award- winning Australian songwriter behind Feist's 1234 and her own ‘intoxicating' albums such as The Last Beautiful Day and Somewhere, Anywhere.

With her new full-length record Heart That's Pounding, she sheds her former identity to offer her first album as Sally Seltmann. After the stripped-back elegance of Somewhere, Anywhere, Sally returns with an album that resounds with confidence, megawatt melodies and energizing joy. Tickets are $20.

 

TRAPPER'S GREATEST HITS: 30TH BIRTHDAY MADNESS!: June 14th at 9:30 PM

He's sure been a wild one, but Trapper Felides is turning 30 and settling down a bit. Having been from MA to NY to LA and back, there've been a lot of adventures, and it's time to celebrate them all with some great music and lots of drinks.

He's been rocking the Joe's Pub stage recently at Our Hit Parade, The Molly Pope Show, Bridget Everett's We've Got Tonight, Murray Hill's Oscar Show, and in Matt Doyle's recent solo venture. Come see his unique breed of entertainment that bridges the Broadway and pop worlds. It's the day after the Tony's so it's going to be all musical theater'd out anyway...schwanky after party to follow. Tickets are $20.
