Joe's Pub Presents the Shells Cocktail Hour, 7/28

Joe's Pub presents their line-up from July 28th to the 30th. Shows include Shells Cocktail Hour and Our Hit Parada and performances from Katie Herzig with Paul Dempsey, Moira Smiley & VOCO with The Jenkins Family, Marion Loguidice, LIGHTS, and Storm Large. Joe's Pub is located at 425 Lafayette Street.

On July 28th at 7:30 PM, the Shells Cocktail Hour presents Michelle "Shells" Hoffman who is fresh out of a less-than-fulfilling relationship and is ready to shed her 9-to-5 facade and convince her ex that she is more than just a successful JP Morgan Senior Analyst. Hopping from hilarious original songs to tales of the "rough" life, Shells feverishly attempts to convince her audience and her ex that she is finally "over it." Armed with a glass of Shiraz and a penchant for drunk-dialing the one person she should not, Shells demonstrates that the fabulous Sex And The City life she thinks she is living and the life she actually leads are two very different things. Hilarious, engaging and ultimately quite poignant, SHELLS leaves audience members cringing and saying, "I know her," or worse, "I am her!" $15

Our Hit Parade starring Bridget Everett, Kenny Mellman, and Neal Medlyn hits Joe's Pub on Wednesday, July 28th at 9:30 PM. Our Hit Parade is a live top-ten countdown show created by Tony nominee and Obie winner Mellman (Kiki & Herb), carnal chanteuse Everett (At Least It's Pink at Ars Nova), pop song opera impresario Medlyn (Neal Medlyn's Unpronounceable Symbol at P.S. 122), producer and MTV cameraman Brendan Kennedy, and writers Ada Calhoun and Peter Schjeldahl. The show is inspired by the musical sketch series "Your Hit Parade" that ran on radio and then television from 1935 to 1959. On that show, cast members performed the week's most popular songs as comically literal skits. In this show, the hosts and special guest stars from the local performance scene present their renditions of current popular hits live on stage! Tickets are $20.

Katie Herzig and special guest Paul Dempsey kick off Thursday, July 29th at 7 PM. Nashville based singer-songwriter Katie Herzig recently released CD Apple Tree is her most adventurous and satisfying album yet. Nominated for a Grammy in 2007, Katie Herzig continues to expand upon her talents with each new musical endeavor. Her critically acclaimed and most recent studio album, Apple Tree, birthed such songs as 'Wish You Well', 'Hologram', 'I Hurt Too' and 'Forevermore', which all have become musical staples in the hearts of Herzig's growing fan base.

Paul Dempsey is the lead singer / songwriter of Something for Kate who previously won the "Rolling Stone Readers & Critics poll (Australia), & were also voted Best Band, Best Song, Best Album, and Best Lead Singer. Tickets are $15.

moira smiley & VOCO perform with special guests, the Jenkins Family, on Thursday, July 29th at 9 PM. They are a visionary blend of voices - redefining harmony singing with the power of folksong, the avant-garde fearlessness of Béla Bartók and the delicious, vaudevillian accompaniment of cello, banjo, accordion, ukelele and body percussion. VOCO brings songs steeped in Appalachia and Eastern Europe and performances that have the elegance of a string quartet and playfulness of street singing.

The Jenkins Family band, comprised of 5 New York City residents (Richard, Sandra, Cassandra, Stephanie and Reid Jenkins), performs whimsical original songs and new arrangements of jazz standards and old time fiddle tunes. Sandra (Ma) Lynk Jenkins grew up on a dairy farm and spent her youth singing in the Lynk family trio in her grandmother's vaudeville shows and county fairs in upstate New York. She met Richard (Pa) Jenkins in the chorus of a local production of Guys and Dolls, the two fell in love, and they set off on the road in a touring jazz trio. When they knew it was time for the band to begin, they settled in New York, and Richard set up shop playing piano at the Nat King Cole bar to make way for Cassandra, Stephanie, and Reid Jenkins. The three grew up studying jazz and performing at festivals and house concerts where they discovered their love of folk songs and old time music. Cassandra plays banjo in two all girl string bands (Uncle Earl, and the Calamity Janes), Stephanie in the old time duo (the Pearly Snaps), and Reid is a recent graduate of the Manhattan School of Music where he studied jazz violin. Nothing beats the blend of sibling harmony and family history. Tickets are $15.

On Thursday, July 29 at 11:30 PM, renowned pop songwriters and frequent collaborators Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne/Ivy/Tinted Windows) and Mike Viola (Candy Butchers) play songs from their respective catalogs, songs written for films (including That Thing You Do, Get Him To The Greek, Music And Lyrics, Walk Hard), and more. Tickets are $22.

On Friday, July 30th at 7 PM, Singer/Songwriter Marion LoGuidice delivers incantatory lyrics with both with delicacy and power. "Kate Bush but more grounded in the real world," LoGuidice creates an unusual sound -- accessible pop that suddenly "takes left turns into Grimm-dark musicAl Woods," and delivers magic, depth, soul; an archetypal play on the spirit that leaves you filled with hope and gratitude. Moments of shamanic joy mixed with guttural depth, her songs are urgent, passionate, and well-worth the journey. Tickets are $20.

LIGHTS gives a special acoustic performance at 9:30 PM on Friday, July 30th. Twenty-two year-old Toronto singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist LIGHTS has been crafting unique, otherworldly synth-pop since she was 14. LIGHTS' songs have already garnered over 22 million plays on MySpace, and she has racked up a #1 hit on MuchMusic, inclusion in a series of Old Navy commercials, and airtime on The Hills. On the strength of her 2008 self-titled EP alone, LIGHTS won the 2009 Juno Award for New Artist of the Year, joining the ranks of Feist and Nelly Furtado.

LIGHTS was also selected as an inaugural artist for MySpace's new Introducing program, and she stars in her own short-form motion-comic series Audio Quest: A Captain LIGHTS Adventure, which aired on MTV and MTV.com. In fall 2009 she wrapped a North American headline tour, which included sold-out performances at New York's Mercury Lounge and the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Most recently, LIGHTS completed a 6 week, sold-out, international tour with Owl City. Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 at the door and with price of admission includes a copy of LIGHTS' forthcoming acoustic EP.

Storms Large takes the the stage at 11:30 PM on Friday, July 30. A performer of Wikipedian proportions, Storm Large has been singing and slinging inappropriate banter at audiences around the globe for more than 15 years . Seven years ago she moved to Portland and quickly , with her band the Balls ,went from wild club act to legendary cult status . In 2006 she was tapped to be on CBS' Rockstar: Supernova . This three month stint on television gained her worldwide fame and in late 2006, her single, Ladylike, debuted at #5 on the hot singles chart in Billboard Magazine , and the number 1 seller on CDBaby . For the next 2 years she and The Balls hit the road. Touring all around the US , Canada, New Zealand , Iceland and Singapore . In 2007 , tired of touring and missing Portland , Storm took a chance and accepted the role of Sally Bowles in PCS' production of Cabaret. The production turned out to be a huge hit and Storm fell in love with the theater. Tickets are $20.
