Violinist Jennifer Koh, cellist Anssi Karttunen, and pianist/composer Magnus Lindberg will give a free performance on Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the Baryshnikov Arts Center's Howard Gilman Performance Space.

The program of modern works will include the world premiere of Magnus Lindberg's Trio for violin, cello, and piano - a new version of his trio originally scored in 2009 for clarinet, cello and piano - as well as his Sonatas for violin and piano. Ms. Koh and Mr. Karttunen will also perform Erwin Schulhoff's Duo for Violin and Cello, and Mr. Karttunen will give the U.S. premiere of five pieces from The Mystery Variations, a collection of 31 solo cello works based on Giuseppe Colombi's Chiacona, each written by a different composer for the occasion of Mr. Karttunen's 50th birthday. The concert is part of The Movado Hour, a series of free one-hour chamber music concerts presented by BAC, designed to combine diverse styles of music.

Free tickets, limited to two per customer, can be reserved one week prior to the performance date by visiting www.smarttix.com, or by calling the box office at 212-868-4444.

Ms. Koh has appeared in BAC's Movado Hour for the past two seasons, having performed both solo works, and a duo recital with Mr. Karttunen for the series. This concert will mark the first time that the three artists will perform together, and Ms. Koh's first experience playing Mr. Lindberg's works. Following their New York performance, the artists will travel to San Francisco to repeat the one-hour program in a free concert at the San Francisco Community Music Center, and to perform a full-length recital at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, both under the auspices of San Francisco Performances.

Violinist Jennifer Koh has received international recognition for her technically dazzling and impassioned performances of both contemporary and traditional repertoire, and has been lauded for her unconventional and imaginative programming. Highlights of her 2010-11 season have included debut performances with the Berkeley, City of Birmingham, Colorado, and San Juan Symphony Orchestras, a North American tour with conductor Pavel Kogan and the Moscow State Symphony, and continued performances of her "Bach and Beyond" recital project in New York, Chapel Hill, and Santa Barbara. Upcoming concerts include a return engagement with the National Symphony Orchestra, performing the American premiere of Augusta Read Thomas's Juggler in Paradise, and the premiere of a new work commissioned for her by Missy Mazzoli with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in a concert that also features her with composer/guitarist Steve Mackey in his own piece, Four Iconoclast Interludes. Ms. Koh's most recent recording for the Chicago- based Cedille label, "Rhapsodic Musings," was released in early 2010 and features solo violin works by 21st-century composers. She also included a visual component to the disc; a dynamic interpretation of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Lachen Verlernt for solo violin by filmmaker Tal Rosner. This short film was presented by the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival in the Shorts: Experimental Collisions category. Her other recordings for the label include the Grammy-nominated "String Poetic."
Finnish pianist and composer Magnus Lindberg is the New York Philharmonic's current composer in residence, a partnership that began in 2009 and has been extended through 2012. Among his works that the Philharmonic has commissioned and premiered are Souvenir (in memoriam Gérard Grisey), EXPO, which opened the orchestra's 168th season, and Al largo, which closed the subscription season in June 2010. Last season, the Philharmonic performed Mr. Lindberg's groundbreaking, theatrical work Kraft, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert and featuring the composer as pianist in his debut performance with the orchestra. Mr. Lindberg's output has positioned him at the forefront of orchestral composition, including the concert-opener Feria (1997), large-scale statements such as Fresco (1997), Cantigas (1999) Concerto for Orchestra (2002-3) and Sculpture (2005), and concertos for cello (1999), clarinet (2002) and violin (2006). Recent works include Seht die Sonne (2007), commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Simon Rattle and the San Francisco Symphony, and his first choral-orchestral work GRAFFITI, premiered in Helsinki in May 2009. Lindberg's music has been recorded on the Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Ondine and Finlandia labels. In 2003 Lindberg was awarded the prestigious Wihuri Sibelius Prize.
Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen leads a busy career as a soloist and chamber-music player, performing all over the world on modern, classical, and baroque cellos, and on violoncello piccolo. A passionate advocate of contemporary music, he has given over 125 world premieres including works by Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, Rolf Wallin, Luca Francesconi and Tan Dun. Karttunen has had a number of Concertos written for him, including Tan Dun's Cello Concerto Yi1, Magnus Lindberg's Cello Concerto, Esa-Pekka Salonen's Concerto "Mania," Martin Matalon's Cello Concerto and Luca Francesconi's Cello Concerto "Rest." Kaija Saariaho's Concerto "Notes on Light" was a Boston Symphony Orchestra commission for Karttunen, and Los Angeles Philharmonic has commissioned a Concerto from Oliver Knussen. Anssi Karttunen performs all the standard cello works, but has also discovered many forgotten masterpieces and transcribed numerous pieces for cello and chamber ensembles. His transcriptions include Brahms's Piano Quintet for String Quintet and Händel-Variations op. 24 for String Trio, Schumann's Cello Concerto for Cello and String Quartet and Album for the Young for String Trio. Karttunen plays on a cello made by Francesco Ruggieri in Cremona circa 1670.
The Baryshnikov Arts Center is the realization of a long-held vision by artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov, who sought to build an arts center in Manhattan that would serve as a gathering place for artists from all disciplines. BAC's opening in 2005 heralded the launch of this mission, establishing a thriving creative laboratory and performance space for artists from around the world. BAC's activities encompass a robust residency program augmented by a range of professional services, including commissions of new work, as well as the presentation of performances by artists of excellence at varying stages of their careers. In tandem with its commitment to supporting artists, BAC is dedicated to building audiences for the arts by presenting contemporary, innovative work at affordable ticket prices. In February 2010, BAC opened the Jerome Robbins Theater, which serves as an organic extension of the existing center, featuring multidisciplinary work, emerging talent, and International Artists, and including artist-centered activity that fosters creative exploration.
