RUSS LOSSING TRIO
(Russ Lossing, piano; John Hebert, bass; Paul Motian, drums)
New York based pianist, composer and improviser Russell Lossing has eight critically acclaimed albums as leader on HatHut Records, CleanFeed Records, Fresh Sound Records, Omnitone Records and Double Time Records. His Solo HatHut album "All Things Arise" was awarded top ten best album of the year in the Village Voice in 2006. His HatHut Cd 'As It Grows', with paul Motian, received 'Choc'(5 stars) in JazzMan Magazine and his "Change of Time" album (improvisations on Bartok's Mikrokosmos) was named Album Of The Decade by DownBeat Magazine(Dec. '09). Lossing's trio album 'Phrase Six' has quickly become a cult classic among musicians and his CleanFeed disc ‘Metal Rat' with Mat Maneri and Mark Dresser has been hailed a masterpiece by critics and musicians. Russ Lossing has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Canada in jazz festivals, jazz clubs and universities, composed over 300 compositions and 21 film scores and has done live radio interviews and performances worldwide.
"The interaction between Russ Lossing (New York pianist, composer and music theorist) and legendary drummer Paul Motian, on Lossing's disc 'Dreamer', is an absorbing case study in two intellectual musicians with very different musical styles. Lossing approaches his piano solos by developing a single motive into a chorus-long tangling and untangling session (à la Rollins). While this style can often fall predictably short, Lossing's refined talents lead to some staggering improvised discoveries. Motian's drum theory, on the other hand, often aims to free itself from consistent motives and common phrases - to the invigorating delight of some and the "just-swing-already!" frustration of others. The combination of sophisticated motivic development from the pianist and playful unpredictability from the drummer leads to a clashing of improvisational styles. Lucky for us, it works. Eric Novod, Jazz.com
"As It Grows (Hat Hut Records) is the work of a gemcutter - brilliant and precise, all facets, angles and elegant internal symmetries. Most of the tracks are brief, and even on the two longer tracks ("Nagual" and "Verse") one senses Lossing's instinct for sculpted brevity. The key relationship here is between pianist and drummer: Motian is as always marvellous, at once brash and delicate." - Signal to Noise
"Russ Lossing is expert at using space, and in some ways is a step beyond Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett, although he is not particularly derivative of any earlier pianist. Lossing is influenced by modern classical music to an extent but his playing is not unremittingly atonal. Instead, he leaves his impressionistic music open to all possibilities, mostly emphasizing dramatic ideas and unexpected silences." All Music Guide
