"Color Field," a new, permanent public art installation by artist Ivan Toth Depeña will be installed today, May 17, 2014 at the Federal Center Station in Lakewood, Colorado, the third largest city in the Denver Metro area.
Commissioned by the Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Denver, Colorado, with assistance from the City of Lakewood, "Color Field" casts ever-changing patterns of color across more than 100 feet of ramps, stairs and walkways, interpreting nature's inherent chaos and representing it as an evolving, kaleidoscopic abstraction. Made of steel, laminated and tempered colored glass and concrete that will be back lit by LEDs at night, each of "Color Fields" 18 "tree-like" structures was created using software that generates form algorithmically. For Depeña, this process insured that each sculpture and each glass lens was unique.
"We are extremely excited to get Ivan's "Color Field" installed," said RTD Art Administrator Lindsey Smith. "The piece truly evolved into magnificent light sculptures that the RTD and the city of Lakewood are proud to have added to our art collection."
"I want the sculpture to change constantly and to have a direct relationship with the landscape and the solar system," says Depeña. "I varied the size and positioning of the colored glass lenses and I used the varying angles of the sun throughout the calendar year as mechanisms to produce an ever-evolving experience. "Color Field" will not be the same in the morning as it will be in the afternoon. It will not be the same this week as it will be next month, etc... Some of my recent work has used artificial light and sensors to interpret interactive/responsive gestures and movements made by human participants to create unexpected outcomes and compositions. This sculpture is interacting with and responding directly to nature and the phenomenon of light to achieve similar results."
About the Site/RTD:
The West Rail Line traverses through Denver, Lakewood, Golden and Jefferson County. It is the first completed rail line of the RTD FasTracks Project. The 12.1 miles of light rail runs between Denver Union Station and Jefferson County Government-Golden Station.
The RTD FasTracks Program is a multi-billion dollar comprehensive transit expansion plan to build 122 miles of new commuter rail and light rail, 18 miles of bus rapid transit, 21,000 new parking spaces at light rail and bus stations, and enhance bus service for easy, convenient bus/rail connections across the eight-county district.
About the Ivan Toth Depeña:
Ivan Toth Depeña is an artist who lives and works in Charlotte, NC and Miami, FL. With a Masters Degree in Architecture from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, Depeña's production as an artist is informed by his experience in art, architecture, technology and design. His studio output includes (and often fuses together) painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, public art, installation and incorporates a hands on methodology combined with high tech output and fabrication. Depeña's work exemplifies the harmonic moment when various creative disciplines come together seamlessly.
His recent public art projects and exhibitions include, "Reflect," a permanent light-based installation for the Stephen Clark Government Center Lobby in downtown Miami, "You and What Army" at the New Britain Museum of American Art in 2014, "Aesthetics and Values 2011" at the Frost Museum in Miami, "Miami in Transition" at the Miami Art Museum and various group and solo exhibitions throughout the US.
His current work includes commissions for several other public projects including a large scale outdoor sculpture titled "Arc" at the Northeast Regional Library in Aventura, FL, a building sized light installation titled "Inside/Out" at the University of New Mexico Pit Athletic Facility, an artificial light waterfall titled "Cascade" in the Reitz Union Expansion at the University of Florida Gainesville Campus. Depeña is also as working on private commissions and the preparation for upcoming museum and gallery exhibitions.
Most recently, Depeña has been awarded a prestigious Knight Arts Challenge Miami Grant for his proposal for a collaborative series of site specific, augmented reality public art projects throughout South Florida, as well as a finalist for the prestigious Cintas Fellowship 2013.
