Stage and screen actor Josh Gad, best known to Broadway fans as the original Elder Cunningham in THE BOOK OF MORMON, seems to be the reigning king of the "sidekick" role.

You know, the one who loyally stands beside the uncomfortably attractive male lead throughout the entire show, biding his time until his show-stopping Act II solo. In addition his role in THE BOOK OF MORMON, Gad has recently been cast as LeFou in the upcoming live-action adaptation of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and even in Disney's feature-length animated earworm, FROZEN, Gad voiced the lovable, though slightly confused, snowman Olaf who sings naïvely about his desire to experience the summer. Bottom line: he even sounds like a sidekick.

If anyone has found his niche, it's Josh Gad. So the question remains, which sidekick roles should he tackle next? The short answer is, all of them. But I suppose a more specific answer would be more helpful. I posed the question on Facebook and Twitter, and our awesome readers gave us their opinions!

Meghan Brown: "I'm thinking maybe Boq in Wicked or Pseudolus in Forum!"

Cassidy Corrao: "im thinking leo bloom in the producers"

@future_Eponine: "THE COWARDLY LION!!!!!!"

@regal_ronnie: "Galinda, no question about it"

Check out my list of the Top 5 sidekick roles Gad should next portray!

5. Nicely Nicely Johnson, GUYS AND DOLLS

Signature song: "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat"

GUYS AND DOLLS could be renamed "The Sidekick Skit," because it's hard to pinpoint one sidekick, or leading man for that matter, because there are so many. Nevertheless, selecting a good secondary character for Gad turns out to be very simple, because of course, only one sidekick gets to lie to a religious group and bring down the house in the process.

4. Bartock, ANASTASIA (aka, "That Animated Musical that Wasn't Disney's")

Signature song: N/A

Technically, Bartock has no songs... Yet. With the impending stage adaptation of the show, let's hope the expanded book elaborates on the white bat's character, for whom Ahrens and Flaherty write a new shower-crooning-worthy hit.

3. Mordred, CAMELOT

Signature song: "The Seven Deadly Virtues"

Mordred is more of an antagonist than sidekick, but he is still an external character who initiates significant action humorously (with a song, obviously) in the second act.

2. Sir Robin, SPAMALOT

Signature Song: "You Won't Succeed on Broadway"

Played fabulously by David Hyde Pierce in the original Broadway version, Sir Robin is one of many knights in "The Sidekick Skit #2," and like Nicely Nicely, he's the lucky one who takes on that self-referential 11 o'clock number.

1. Sancho, THE MAN OF LA MANCHA

Signature Song: "I Like Him," "A Little Gossip"

Sancho is the quintessential sidekick. Not one song, but two. And in the classic sidekick style, he really is by Don Quixote's side for the entire show, even to his death bed. Oh hey, looks like there's talk of a MAN OF LA MANCHA revival this year! HOW CONVENIENT!

BONUS: Seymour, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Signature Song: Half of the score

"But Sally, Seymour isn't a sidekick!" True. That's why it's called the bonus round. Seymour is an underdog protagonist, which totally fits in with Josh Gad's type, and he would be PERFECT for this role.

...And Facebook fan Chelsey Robichaud concurs!

"Josh Gad would be an amazing Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors! His singing, style, comedy and hint awkwardness would fit the role perfectly!"

While we wait for these casting announcements, watch his recent appearance on the LATE LATE SHOW in which he sings a parody medley of songs from FROZEN!

Gad's next project is an unnamed musical movie from Universal with music by Stephen Schwartz. Do you think this will be another sidekick role?
