Hunter College Department of Art and Art History Features Public Lecture by Charles Gaines, Today

The Hunter College Department of Art and Art History is pleased to announce a public lecture by Charles Gaines, the Fall 2013 Judith Zabar Visiting Artist,Monday, November 4, 2013, at 7:00 pm in the Lang Recital Hall, located in the Hunter North Building, entrance on East 69th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues in Manhattan.

For more than forty years, Charles Gaines's art has explored the intersections of aesthetics, politics, language and systems. Gaines works across a variety of media, from drawing and photography to video and music-in notation and performed-and engages sources and thinkers as varied as Tantric Buddhist drawings, Hannah Darboven's systems, John Cage's chance strategies, and the writings of Franz Fanon and Léopold Senghor.

Charles Gaines has had over seventy one-person exhibitions in the United States and Europe, including, most recently, at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York. A survey of his career was mounted in 2012 by the Pomona College Museum of Art and the Pitzer College Art Gallery in Claremont, California, and in 2014, a one-person exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem will focus on his work of the 1970s and 1980s. Among his many group exhibitions are: "Blues For Smoke," Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Whitney Museum; "Now Dig This! Art and Black Los Angeles 1960 - 1980," Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and MoMA PS 1; "All Of This And Nothing: The Hammer Museum Invitational; "State of Mind/Art from California Circa 1970," Berkeley Art Museum and Orange County Museum of Art; "Under the Big Black Sun: 1974-1981," Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Tang Museum at Skidmore College; and "Think with the Senses/Feel with the Mind: Art in the Present Tense" at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007.

Charles Gaines lives and works in Los Angeles and for more than 25 years has been on the faculty of the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia. He is a 2013 recipient of a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

About the Judith Zabar Visiting Artists Program
In November 2007, Hunter College received a generous commitment to establish the
Judith Zabar Visiting Artist Program Fund. The Fund has allowed Hunter to bring a series of internationally recognized artists to campus to work directly with students in the MFA program, in master classes, critical seminars, and private tutorials, providing students with the unique opportunity to interact with top practitioners in the field. Zabar Visiting Artists also present public lectures where they discuss their work, engage in conversation with members of Hunter's faculty, and with Hunter's broader student community and the general public.
