Hoffman, Huffman, Merkerson and More Win SAG Awards

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Felicity Huffman and S. Epatha Merkerson were among the theatre stars to bring home SAG Awards.

The 12th Annual SAG Awards ceremony were held on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center, and aired live nationally on Turner Network Television (TNT).

Hoffman (Long Day's Journey Into Night, True West) received a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his turn as Truman Capote as Capote; he had previously picked up a Golden Globe Award. 

Atlantic Theater Company co-founder Huffman (Speed-the-Plow) garnered a SAG for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a (TV) Comedy Series for "Desperate Housewives." The actress was also nominated for a SAG Award for her performance in Transamerica; Reese Witherspoon ended up winning Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Walk The Line. 

Paul Giamatti (The Iceman Cometh, Three Sisters) picked up a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in Cinderella Man.  Merkerson (Birdie Blue, The Piano Lesson) won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for HBO's adaptation of "Lackawanna Blues;" the actress had picked up Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for the same film. Paul Newman (Our Town, Picnic) won a SAG Award for his work in the HBO film "Empire Falls."

Shirley Temple Black received the 42nd Annual Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony. The SAG Awards are the only awards in which actors grant accolades to their peers.
