After completing a national tour, HISTORY OF THE WORD will be presented at NY's famed Apollo Theatre on April 8th at 10am. HISTORY OF THE WORD is presented by TheaterFirst, KDF and The Apollo Theatre, written by Ben Snyder, directed by Monica Williams, and conceived by Orin Wolf & Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj.

An art form that speaks to today's youth, HISTORY OF THE WORD was conceived as a way to fuse spoken word poetry and hip-hop music appealing to a younger audience. The result is a heart pumping, adrenaline pounding, percussion fueled infusion of Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, and Education. This hip-hop musical journey examines the complexities, goals, hopes and dreams of six diverse high school students.

Teenagers have limited opportunities to engage in political and social issues that severely impact their communities. Through HISTORY OF THE WORD, high school students will be able to document their opinions and personal histories and then hear their stories/poems performed on stage. HISTORY OF THE WORD offers these students the opportunity to connect to a theatrical experience that celebrates their lives on stage.

In today's current economic climate where education slashes are the norm, HISTORY OF THE WORD is a theatrical project that expands beyond the stage and into the classroom, bringing an arts curriculum into the schools that focuses on helping today's youth communicate more effectively while instilling a love of language and a sense of confidence. HISTORY OF THE WORD allows Shakespeare to be as alive as Jay Z. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreams again and young audiences are empowered with the knowledge that their words and thoughts will shape the language of tomorrow. HISTORY OF THE WORD is a truly interactive experience that begins in the classroom, continues onto the stage, and stays with the student for the rest of their life.

HISTORY OF THE WORD was created when several of the countries most respected and talented spoken word artists came together and created original works that explored themes that included self-image, history and community. HISTORY OF THE WORD  was conceived by Orin Wolf & Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj and written by Ben Snyder.  HISTORY OF THE WORD is based on the direction and choreography of Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, with music by Akil Dasan and Kheedim Oh. Original poetry written by Felice Belle, Akil Dasan, Kayo, Marisa Vural, Yolanda Kae Wilkinson, Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj and Kara Sachs.

The talented performers include: Eymard Meneses Cabling, B. Jones, Sasha Sloan, Spadaque Volcimus, Ryan Tramont, and Isabel Hilario.  This production will begin with a poetry jam session featuring high school students from around the country, who have participated in the HOTW education out reach program. Costumes have been provided by Sean John.
