North Shore Music Theatre's 2006 season will include the regional premiere of Hairspray as well as a revised production of Damn Yankees. The esteemed company, which is located in Beverly, MA, will also present Ain't Misbehavin,' Cinderella, Singin' in the Rain, and Jesus Christ Superstar.
The season will launch with Damn Yankees, which will begin performances on April 25th and run through May 14th. Joe DiPietro adapted the book from the original by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop; Washington Senators fan Joe Boyd is now a Boston Red Sox fan in the North Shore version. "NSMT puts a new spin on this hilarious and heart-warming classic which
now tells the story of a die-hard Red Sox fan who makes a deal with the
devil to help the Sox take the pennant from the dreaded Yankees," state press notes on the musical, which features a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.
The Fats Waller revue Ain't Misbehavin' will follow Damn Yankees from May 30th through June 18th. Directed by Kent Gash and featuring Waller classics such as the title song, "Mean to Me," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," the show" evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American
original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs he made
famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan
Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe."Singin' in the Rain--based
on the classic movie musical that featured a score by Arthur Freed and
Nacio Herb Brown and screenplay by Betty Comden and Adolph Green--will
next be performed, running from July 4th through 23rd.
"It's 1927, and Don Lockwood and Lina LaMont are the toast of
Tinseltown until 'talkies' come on the scene." The production will
include real rain for the title song.
From August 22nd through September 10th, North Shore will present Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella; the show was previously cancelled and postponed after the theatre was severely damaged in a fire. "You and your whole family will be swept away by this beloved tale of
love and transformation and dazzled by the special effects, all
designed exclusively for our signature theater-in-the-round."
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's biblical rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar will run from September 19th through October 8th. "Jesus Christ Superstar chronicles the last seven days in the life of
Jesus, dramatizing the excitement caused by his message, his betrayal,
his trial before Pontius Pilate, and his ultimate sacrifice." Songs include "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Everything's Alright," "Gethsemane" and the title song.
North Shore will wrap up its 2006 season with the regional theatre premiere of Hairspray, which won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Musical (as well as seven other Tonys) and has run for over 1,440 performances on Broadway. The show features a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Thomas Meehan and Mark O'Donnell. "Based on the 1988 John Waters film, audiences will journey back to
1960's Baltimore and join our hefty heroin Tracy Turnblad, a big girl
with big dreams and even bigger hair. She'll do whatever it takes to
claim a spot on a popular television dance show, win the heart of Link
Larkin, and turns the town upside down in her efforts to racially
integrate television." It will run from October 24th through November 12th.
