Hillary and Clinton

The stars of the new Broadway play Hillary and Clinton, Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow, have made the cover of Variety! In their interview, they discuss the current insurgence of political themes on Broadway.

Lithgow commented on the potential for controversy surrounding this particular topic in this era of divided politics.

"If the play is controversial, I would say it's controversial just in the fact that it's being done," Lithgow said. "Because people reflexively think,'What are the real Bill and Hillary going to think about this play?'"

Metcalf thinks that this particular play is a bit haunting because the characters in the play are younger than their real-life counterparts, and therefore aren't privy to the future.

"There are a few lines at the end of the play that are haunting to me, because we've seen the 10 years that these characters have not seen yet," she said. "It makes them seem vulnerable, because we know what they don't know."

The interview also chatted with Nathan Lane, who's starring in Gary, another political piece, as well as Kerry Washington, who just wrapped up American Son, about gun violence and police brutality.

Hillary and Clinton, the new play by Tony Award nominee Lucas Hnath, starring award-winning actors Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow, has found its home on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre. Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, previews begin March 16, 2019, ahead of an official opening night on Thursday, April 18, 2019.

Behind closed doors in the state of New Hampshire during the early days of 2008, a former First Lady named Hillary (Metcalf) is in a desperate bid to save her troubled campaign for President of the United States. Her husband, Bill (Lithgow), sees things one way; her campaign manager, Mark, sees things another. If any of this sounds familiar, don't be fooled; in a universe of infinite possibilities, anything that can happen, will.
