Take Root with Gina Graham/Esse Aficionado
Chaos. Technology. Beauty. This work incorporates videotape and performers explore movement through massive amounts of VHS tape, resulting in a continuum of precarious exchanges. Lightweight VHS material will drape over the dancers' bodies resembling sculptor, Eva Hesse's "Untitled Rope Piece" (1970).Witness this homage to the obsolete recording format, repurposed and made into a texturally-rich, 3D object for the piece.

Esse Aficionado is a modern dance company established in 2001, led by the artistic vision of its founder -choreographer and collagist, Gina Graham. Her partner in crime and co?founder is Veronica De La Rosa. Together, they are leading the company into a new chapter that revolves around virtual collaboration and exploring new ways to exchange movement. With Gina in New York City and Veronica in Los Angeles, the bicoastal duo is using the internet as their main tool in communicating ideas. The mission of Esse Aficionado is to encourage professional artists to collaborate their technical and aesthetic ideas for the purpose of creating works of thought?provoking art. The company believes that dance can inspire change in the lives of those who experience it.

Graham is a dancer and choreographer based in New York City and the Artistic Director of Esse Aficionado. In addition to self-producing shows at venues such as the Joyce SoHo and City Center Studios, her work has been presented by Movement Research at Judson Church, Dixon Place, DUMBO Dance Festival and Velocity Dance Center's Next Festival in Seattle. Her co-choreographed works have premiered in Seattle at the Northwest New Works Festival, On the Boards Festival and MiKiJio Arts. Graham graduated with a BFA in Dance Composition from Purchase Conservatory. She also explores new concepts and ideas through her collage work, which has been exhibited in New York City and Seattle.

Veronica strives to provoke thought and bring a touch of humor to the program with her choreography and site?specific work. In 1999, she graduated from Purchase College Conservatory of Dance with a BFA in Dance and a Certificate in Arts Management. Upon graduating, Veronica moved to New York City, studied at Merce Cunningham Studio as a scholarship student and co?founded Esse Aficionado. As Founding Director, De La Rosa spearheads every aspect of EA's productions and is Treasurer of the Board of Directors. Throughout her versatile dance career, Veronica has performed in various dance companies, musicals and sideshows. The Los Angeles native attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and was a member of Kitetails, a company led by her mentor, post?modern pioneer, Rudy Perez.

FERTILE GROUND is a monthly new works showcase for emerging and established artists now in its 8th season, producing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. This non-curated performance event features five-six choreographers each evening, and includes a post-performance discussion with wine and cheese, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.
