Geva Presents YOUNG @ HEART IS ALIVE AND WELL For One Night Only 7/8
By: Gabrielle Sierra
Geva Theatre Center is delighted to bring the internationally renowned Young @ Heart Chorus to Rochester for one night only - July 8, 2010 at the Auditorium Theatre.
Young @ Heart has delighted and inspired audiences around the world through their music with live appearances and a recent hit film. As its name suggests, age is integral to this company and performers range in age from 73 to 89. Slaughtering any good-natured sympathy by using age as an ironic weapon, Young @ Heart comes to Rochester with Alive and Well, a surprising and hilarious concert featuring songs by Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and more that is not about old people performing, but rather a performance that happens to feature older people. When Rochester native Bob Cilman and Judith Sharpe organized Young @ Heart in 1982, all of the members were residents of an elderly housing project in Northampton, MA. This first group included elders who lived through both World Wars. One of the members had fought in the Battle of the Somme and another had lost her husband in World War I. Some members had prior professional theatre or music experience, others had performed on the amateur level and some had never stepped onto a stage. In 1983, they staged their first show, Stompin at the Salvo, and created a sensation. Sadly, no one from that original group is with us today, but they sowed the seeds for a thriving chorus that has gone on to delight audiences around the world. In 1996, the group was invited to appear in the annual R Festival in Rotterdam. The response was phenomenal and for over a decade the chorus has been on over a dozen more tours of Europe, Australia and Canada. They recently returned from a two week tour of Japan.Videos
