The Gateway Playhouse’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone begins performances July 29th on Long Island, in Bellport, NY.

Directed by Dom Ruggiero, Choreographed by Jody Madaras, and musical direction by Jeff Hoffman, the production will run through August 22nd.

Book by Bob Martin & Don McKellar and Music & Lyrics by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison, this show is a “tale within a tale” of a reclusive theater fanatic, known simply as "Man in Chair," who chases away his blues by living vicariously through old musicals played on his ancient Hi-Fi record player. The show kicks into high gear when he drops the needle on his favorite LP, the (fictitious) 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone, and the musical magically bursts to life in his small apartment, which morphs into a lavish 1920s style Broadway musical stage.

The cast features Nat DeWolf (Man In Chair), Lauren Cohn (The Drowsy Chaperone), Bob Freschi (Underling), Sean Montgomery (Robert Martin), Matthew Crowle (George), Anthony Reimer (Feldzieg), Ellie Mooney (Kitty), James Donegan (Adolpho), Jennifer Byrne (Janet Van De Graaff), Natalie Renee (Trix), Tyler Rivera Stein (Gangster #1), Will Cohen (Gangster #2), and Golden Globe nominee Allyce Beasley (Mrs. Tottendale).

The ensemble comprises Matthew Alexander, Cara Noel Antosca, Bryant Smith, and Chelsey Whitelock.

The Drowsy Chaperone debuted on Broadway on May 1st, 2006, and ran through Dec. 30th, 2007, totaling 674 performances. Originally directed by Casey Nicholaw, the musical comedy won 5 Tony Awards, including best book and best original score.

The production design team includes Brittany Loesch (set), Christopher J. Landy (lights), and Margaret A. McKowen (costumes). Joe McGuire is the production stage manager.

Performances of The Drowsy Chaperone are Tuesday-Friday at 8 PM; Saturday at 3 & 8:30 PM; Sunday at 2 PM with Wednesday and Thursday matinees at 2 PM and special performances at 7 PM Sunday, August 2nd & August 9th, no matinee August 9th.

Gateway Playhouse is celebrating its 60th season as Long Island’s Premier Professional Musical Theatre.

The Drowsy Chaperone opens on the Bellport stage, Wednesday, July 29 with performances through Saturday, August 22.
