David Burtka Joins 'Opposite of Sex'

BroadwayWorld.com has learned that David Burtka (most recently seen on Broadway as Tulsa in Gypsy) will be stepping into The Opposite of Sex when it plays in San Francisco. The role originally was to be played by Matthew Morrison who left to film "Once Upon A Mattress" for ABC.

Burtka's credits include Edward Albee's The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? Off-Broadway: Edward Albee's The Play About the Baby (Clarence Derwent Award), Beautiful Thing, Bad Boy Johnny. National tour: Beauty and the Beast (where he appeared as a dancing pepper shaker). Regional: Children of Eden, Paper Mill Playhouse; The Music Man, Northshore Music Theatre; Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Weston Playhouse. TV: "The West Wing." Movies: Hollywood Ending (Woody Allen), 24 Nights. Training: Interlochen. BFA, University of Michigan; the William Esper Studios.

Burtka is joined by Kerry Butler, Jeff McCarthy, Karen Ziemba, John Bolton, Donna Vivino, Joe Mandragona and Ian Scott McGregor.

With music and lyrics by Douglas J. Cohen, this new musical is an adaptation of the 1998 film featuring Christina Ricci, Lisa Kudrow and Lyle Lovett. Cohen and Robert Jess Roth (Director of Disney's Beauty and the Beast) wrote the book based on Don Roos' screenplay of the same name.
