DPTV and PBS Present Live Streaming of Art & Culture Discussion to Kick Off Black History Month, Today
Detroit Public Television and PBS Black Culture Connection are teaming up today and throughout the weekend in Detroit as more than 300 artists, stakeholders, educators and cultural activists gather at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit for the third annual Sphinx Organization conference on diversity in the arts.
This important event will feature 35 speakers on 13 issues-all designed to discuss best practices as it relates to the arts, philanthropy and grant making, research and policy, creative placemaking, and innovation.
The conference coverage will kickoff PBS Black Culture Connection's Black History Month 2015 line-up which includes more than a dozen NEW videos, articles, live events and digital resources.
Headlining the impressive roster of presenters will be the Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts, Jane Chu. The lineup also includes comedian, writer and actress, Maysoon Zayid; DTE Energy Foundation Vice President of Public Affairs, Faye Nelson; and Kresge Foundation Senior Advisor of Arts and Cultural Program, Maria Rosario Jackson, and many others. One of the most important topics of conversation will be the role of the arts in improving the academic performance of disadvantaged kids-a very important issue as we kick off Black History Month.
Then, on Sunday the conference will lead into the Sphinx Musical Competition Finals Concert at Orchestra Hall onSunday, February 1. In its 18th year, the event will bring 18 of the country's top young Black and Latino string players to Detroit as they compete on stage for a chance at winning $50,000 and performance opportunities with major orchestras across the country. The finals concert will feature the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Grams, as well as guest artists Cristina Pato, Galician bagpiper and member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble.
