Hunter (The Whale);Amy Herzog (The Great God Pan); Annie Baker (The Flick); Tanya Barfield (The Call); and Tony Award-winner Richard Greenberg (Far From Heaven, a new musical) with Tony Award nominees Scott Frankel (music) and Michael Korle (lyrics). Hear about Berlin’s prolific career, from his rags-to-riches tale to the anti-Semitism directed at the composer of “White Christmas.” Jeffrey Magee is the author of Irving Berlin’s American Musical Theater.

She has dazzled millions “time after time,” and this time Cyndi Lauper is gracing 92Y’s stage to share her new book, Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir (Atria Books; September 18, 2012). Enjoy never-before-told stories from the Grammy and Emmy Award winner as she talks to celebrity interviewer Valerie Smaldone about her remarkable 25-year career. Lauper wrote the music and lyrics for the new Broadway production of Kinky Boots, with a book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein and directed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell.

Join director, producer, writer, actor and author Peter Bogdanovich for a lively conversation about the life, teaching and career of Stella Adler—one of the most famous and influential acting teachers of all time. Adler taught the likes of Brando, De Niro, Pacino, Streep and more, including Bogdanovich himself. Victoria Wilson, Adler’s step-daughter, adds her own insights.

Oscar Hammerstein II was arguably one of the world’s most prolific and influential lyricists. Join us for live music and singing, entertaining clips and an enlightening exploration of his life, works and major contributions to musical theater. Carla Innerfield is a musicologist, music educator and performer and the director of education of the Connecticut Opera. Chris Coogan is a jazz and gospel musician.

I was caught in an act of perfect piety. “Why does tragedy exist?” Anne Carson asked in Tragedy: A Curious Art Form. “Because you are full of rage. Why are you full of rage? Because you are full of grief.” Carson returns to the Poetry Center for a staged reading of her new translation of Sophocles’ famous tragedy. Director Sam Gold’s recent productions include Theresa Rebeck’s Seminar on Broadwayand Annie Baker’s adaptation of Uncle Vanya.
