Creative Alternatives of New York (CANY) will be honored with the 2012 Aaron Stein Memorial Fund Award by The American Group Psychotherapy Association during the Foundation sponsored Conference Luncheon on Saturday, March 10 at 11:30 a.m. at The Sheraton Towers.   For nearly 30 years, CANY has helped children and adults across the New York metro area who have endured trauma to rebuild their lives through the use of drama therapy.

The Aaron Stein Memorial Fund Award is given annually to honor the memory of Aaron Stein, a pioneer in group psychotherapy and an inspiring teacher. The award recognizes organizations that utilize the creative applications of group theory and technique to benefit the community, particularly in non-psychotherapeutic settings.

CANY Executive Director Jonathan Hilton, who will accept the award on behalf of the organization, had this to share, “Our drama therapy model is based on the belief that all healing occurs in relationship, so the group therapy process is core to our work.”  He went on to add, “Thus we are truly honored to receive this recognition from the American Group Psychotherapy Association.”

Through the use of drama therapy and creative expression in a therapeutic group setting, CANY helps children and adults expand their self concept, imagine new live possibilities and build the social and emotional tools they need in order to live meaningful lives.

Working in partnership with 15 of New York’s leading social service organizations and health care institutions, CANY provides approximately 1,400 therapeutic theater groups annually in residential centers for children, special schools, veterans hospitals, international refugee centers, domestic violence safe shelters and community centers serving trauma exposed children and adults.

CANY will hold their annual gala Monday evening, April 30th at The Edison Ballroom.

“As an artist, I strongly believe that theater can change lives,” said Academy Award-winner and CANY Board Member Susan Sarandon.  “At CANY this is being proven on a daily basis.”
