ComposersCollaborative, inc. presents composer/pianist Jed Distler performing every song written by the iconic Thelonious Monk, to mark the 30th anniversary of his death on February 17th, 1982. The program lasts about two hours, including a short intermission.

“I heard Monk in person only once, when I was 14,” Jed recalls. “It was a late night at the Village Vanguard, and the music didn’t register. But soon after, I got to hear Monk’s early recordings, and realized just how unique and forceful a musician he was. But you cannot imitate his sound, his pianism, his phrasing. When I went back to this repertoire, at first I thought Monk would plug me back into my early experiences in jazz. Instead, his music has provided refreshing new gateways in my life as a composer/pianist in the contemporary classical music world.”
