From Miller Theatre Director Melissa Smey:
"This concert is such a perfect finale to this year's Composer Portraits series. Joan Tower is an incredibly influential composer, and it's been a great pleasure to work with these phemonenal young musicians from Curtis, where she is in residence this semester. We're looking forward to welcoming Joan, a Columbia alumna, back to campus."

Joan Tower (b. 1938)
Joan Tower is one of the most popular composers in America, and it's easy to hear why. Her music's driving rhythms, colorful orchestration, and melodic interest have instant appeal. Performers from the esteemEd Curtis Institute bring an incredibly wide-ranging program-including works for percussion, brass, piano, string quartet, and flute-to Miller's stage.

ARTISTS: Curtis 20/21
David Ludwig, artistic director

PROGRAM: Copperwave (2006)
String Force (2010)
Ivory and Ebony (2009)
Angels (String Quartet No. 4) (2008)
Trio Cavany (2007)
Simply Purple (2008)
Wild Purple (1998)
DNA (2003)

BIOS: Joan Tower's music is noted by a number of defining qualities: driving rhythms and colorful orchestrations influenced by the sounds and sensations of a childhood spent in South America; approachability for listeners and players alike, resulting from her engagement with the performers of her music (often written with specific musicians in mind); and her own performances as a pianist. Her early works were serial in conception. In the 1970s she moved toward more tonal, Messiaen-like sonorities. She has written a number of works paying homage to composers such as Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Copland. She was the first composer chosen for a Ford Made in America consortium commission, Made in America. Its top-selling recording won three 2008 Grammy awards, including Best Classical Contemporary Composition.
Curtis 20/21 is the contemporary music ensemble of the Curtis Institute of Music. Flexible in size and scope, the group performs a wide range of music of contemporary composers and composers from the recent past, and often collaborates with guest artists in residence at Curtis. Recent offerings have included centenary programs for Samuel Barber, Elliott Carter, and Olivier Messiaen; a collaborative performance with eighth blackbird; and a tribute concert for resident composer John Corigliano. Curtis 20/21 is committed to performing and commissioning works from Curtis students and alumni.

David Ludwig's music has been performed internationally by leading musicians in some of the world's most prestigious locations. He has had performances in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Library of Congress, and his music has been played on PBS and NPR's Weekend Edition. He has held residencies with organizations like Meet the Composer and the Isabella Gardner Museum, and with summer festivals including the Marlboro Music School and the MacDowell and Yaddo artist colonies. He has won numerous awards and honors from nationally recognized arts organizations. Born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Ludwig holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds degrees from Oberlin, Manhattan School of Music, Curtis, and The Juilliard School. He serves on the composition faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he is the artistic director of the Curtis 20/21 Contemporary Music Ensemble.
