A testament to rebellion. An ode to rock music. And one hell of a ride. Sam Shepard's THE TOOTH OF CRIME is a mythic showdown set in a surreal American West where renegade rock stars duel under the corrupting pressure of fame. Director Maridee Slater (Columbia Directing MFA 2015) valiantly leads a band of rockstars in this collaboration between Columbia Stages and Lickety Split Productions, featuring original music composed by Jillie Mae Eddy and Sam Gelband (of Honcho Poncho) that will assault the senses in an amalgamation of styles, from classic rock to rap and beyond.
Director, Maridee Slater (You've Been Tartuffed, The Girl From Bare Cove) is no stranger to marrying theater and live rock music. She most recently worked on a workshop for the musical, Waitress with Tony Award winning director, Diane Paulus, and Grammy award-nominee, Sara Bareilles. "Our heroes are dying," reads the first line of the play - a sentiment Slater believes to be a sign of our times. The legends of American Rock are coming to the end of their lines and our culture is collectively scavenging for a future. As the original rockers, the ones who broke and rewrote the rules, fade away, our generation is flung into a new era of music making and the music industry. The Tooth of Crime takes a hard look at how we may choose to roll with the change or otherwise be blown to dust and lost to time. THE TOOTH OF CRIME runs from March 11th to 14th at the Connelly Theater on the Lower East Side. Tickets are available at www.columbiastage.org.TOOTH OF CRIME
