CAMBUYON to Make U.S. Premiere at New Vic, 2/6-22

Experience the exuberant rhythms of an Old World shipping port when Cambuyón travels from the Canary Islands and Barcelona, Spain, to make its U.S. Premiere at The New Victory Theater from February 6-22, 2015. Through dance, rhythmic drumming and vocal percussion, seven performers trade robust beats with sounds of Africa, Ireland, Spain and the Americas to form unique rhythms and cultural cadences.

When it comes to making instruments out of everyday objects, anything goes for the artists of Enlace S.C.'s Cambuyón. Wooden crates, steel buckets, recycled glass bottles and even a small matchbox find new life in the hands and feet of this inventive Canarian and Catalan ensemble. Sounds of a seaport segue into vocal riffs, powerful drumming and tinkling tunes on found objects as the multi-talented performers create a fusion of dance styles, including body percussion, tap dance, flamenco and hip hop to showcase and celebrate the diversity of rhythmic forms from Spain.

Created by Enlace S.C. (Enlace Servicios Culturales) and co-produced by the Tenerife Opera House and L'Estruch de Sabadell in Barcelona, Cambuyón celebrates the evolution and cross-cultural pollination of rhythm and music made possible by sea travel. The origin of the show title stems from signs used in Spanish trading ports for over 100 years - vessels would dock with sellable goods, inviting locals to row out and "Come Buy On" the ships.

Enlace S.C.'s previous shows have included Terekitetap, a mix between Canary Islands traditional music, tap dance and body percussion; Agua De Volcán (presented at the International Exhibition in Zaragoza 2008), about the journey water takes through the Tenerife mountains; Faros de Silencio, a show where a musician, an actor and a tap dancer tell a love story; and Refinado La Cruda Historia, a multimedia show presented in a petrol tank in Tenerife where the story of Santa Cruz's history is explained from 1930 until today.

Directed by Carlos Belda, Cambuyón features Néstor Busquets, Raúl Cabrera, Thanos Daskalopoulos, Jep Meléndez, Berta Pons, Clara Pons and Jonatan Rodríguez. Lighting design is by Dimas Cadrés, sound design is by Ubaldo Pérez Conde, set design is by María Toledo, costumes are by Raquel Rodríguez and the production is managed by Josefa Suárez and Ana Pérez.
