Brooklyn Museum's Target First Set for 10/4

On October 4, Target First Saturday celebrates the vibrant Latino communities in and around Brooklyn through music, talks, and dance. Highlights include music by La Mecánica Popular, a talk by journalist and filmmaker Raquel Cepada, and a social club with dancers from Global Rhythms leading rumba and salsa lessons.

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. *Denotes a ticketed event.

5 p.m. Music: Afro Latin jazz by Grammy-award winning composer Arturo O'Farrill and his famous Octet with an intro set by youth orchestra The Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats Orchestra.

*6 p.m. Artist Project: Crossing Brooklyn artist Miguel Luciano invites you to participate in Pimp My Piragua, his mobile public art project commemorating the innovations of Latino street vendors by transforming a traditional pushcart for selling shaved ice (piraguas) into a pushcart-tricycle with a hi-fi sound and video system.

6 p.m. Dance: Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana presents Bailes de Ida y Vuelta, a performance exploring the influences of Latin American dances and rhythms on Flamenco. sound and video system.

*6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-On Art: Create a colorful dyed sash inspired by Mayan textile design.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Pop-Up Gallery Talks: Explore works by Latino artists in these short, lively conversations held throughout the galleries. Look for Museum Guides wearing an orange "Pop-Up Gallery Talks" button.

*7 p.m. Talk: Journalist and filmmaker Raquel Cepada talks about Latina identity, which she has explored through her film Some Girls and her book Bird of Paradise: How I became Latina.

8-10 p.m. Social Club: Our social club includes dancers from Global Rhythms leading rumba and salsa lessons, Brooklyn Street Art presenting an interactive mural, domino games, and specialty cocktails. Activities in this space are geared toward adult visitors.

9 p.m. Music: Brooklyn-based band La Mecánica Popular blends '70s-style salsa with the new wave of tropical sounds.
