August Theater Productions announces a new screwball musical comedy, "National Pastime", opening in August 2012 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

"National Pastime" was originally written for and performed at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The plot is about a 1933 Iowa radio station struggling to survive. The last time they had any ratings was when they broadcast the exploits of their home town baseball team but that team is long gone. So they create a new one, a fictional team who can't lose. They broadcast the games over the air and soon the ratings are soaring. All is well until Life Magazine shows up to do a story on the team.

"National Pastime" has a book by Tony Sportiello ("LOL", "Second Chance") and music and lyrics by Al Tapper ("Sessions", "Imperfect Chemistry".) It will be directed by Nancy Robillard with musical direction by David Wolfson. The show will be performed for three weeks at the Peter Jay Sharp in preparation for a Broadway run.

"National Pastime" has been performed at the Keegan Theatre in Washington, D.C., where it was recommended for a Helen Hayes Award. It was originally work shopped by Algonquin Theater Productions in 2011.
