Broadway Gypsies to Audition Future Performers

The Broadway Theatre Project will bring in seasoned Broadway professionals to audition high school and college performing arts students for this years summer intensive program.

Saturday, January 7th at 10:00 am, Ripley Grier Studios will host auditions for students who will prepare a one minute monologue, 16 bars of a song and learn a dance combination to be presented before some of Broadway’s own performing artists including: Herman Payne (Fosse, West Side Story, The Wiz and 9 to 5 on Broadway.) Herman has worked with Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Usher, Mya, Destiny’s child, Whitney Houston among others. John Parks (The Wiz, The Mighty Gents .Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Jose Limon, and films including Rage in Harlem, and Spike Lee’s Malcom X. Lloyd Culbreath , Associate Choreographer on Broadway’s revivals of On The Town and Man of La Mancha. As a performer his Broadway credits include Big Deal, Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, Anything Goes,, Guys and Dolls, The Tap Dance Kid and Sophisticated Ladies.

These Broadway Gypsies are part of a prestigious group comprised of professionals actively working in the performing arts. This years Broadway Theatre Project has named Ben Vereen as the Artistic Director for 2012.

Founded in 1991, Broadway Theatre Project has been named by Playbill as the “world’s most prestigious musical arts education program for high school and college students.” Debra McWaters, along with Ann Reinking and others co-founded the Broadway Theatre Project, which has developed into a world-class training ground for young artists. Since Ann Reinking has retired, Debra McWaters continues as President and Co-Artistic Director of BTP.
