Broadway Bound Theatre Festival: More Than Just A Bunch Of Plays

Coming off of its blockbuster inaugural season which entertained over 4500 theatregoers over a 3-week period, Broadway Bound Theatre Festival is back for its second year as New York City's answer to "What's the best festival in town?"

With the goal of becoming a launching pad for regional, Off-Broadway and Broadway transfers, all shows selected for the festival have received script critiques from a panel of award-winning playwrights. "The result is a handpicked series of great, never-before-seen work that provides a complete and compelling theatrical experience for our audiences," says Lenore Skomal, festival director.

In addition to the Main Stage presentations, BBTF has also added an Incubator Reading Series for scripts that were submitted to the festival but are not yet fully developed for production. "These playwrights enjoy all the benefits of the Main Stage experience and all of our expertise to help bring the best product to their staged reading," says Skomal. Performances in this series are free to the public, with the intention of bringing new work in front of an audience so that it can continue to be crafted.

BBTF's goal extends beyond the four walls of the Theatre at the 14th St. Y, which the festival calls home every summer. "We're determined to bring great theatre back to Off-Broadway by doing what we do best: Curating new work and supporting the playwrights by helping them produce by actually producing their own shows. You can't get that from a seminar," says Skomal.

The all-encompassing education participants receive leads them through designing marketing graphics, generating press releases, honing elevator pitches, building fan bases, specifying target audiences, and understanding the importance that a strong production team-including lighting and set design-to bring to the stage fully-realized performances.

In an industry rapidly changing with the era of self-producing content, the process of play development needed to be refreshed. BBTF serves participants as a master class in self-production, a lesson in appreciating all the elements that enhance our theatre community, whilst serving audiences with a quality theatrical experience without the Times Square price tag.

Get ready for a curated showcase of exceptional new works in this community-building and joyous celebration of staged theatre! Performances run August 4 through August 26, 2018 at the Theatre at the 14th Street Y.
