Bold Proposal to Present Lauren Yee's HOOKMAN at The Chain Theatre
Maurie Moore and Shamus lead the new producing duo behind the existential slasher comedy on West 36th Street.
Bold Proposal, a new producing collaboration led by Maurie Moore and Shamus, is launching this month with an intimate production of "Hookman" by playwright Lauren Yee (Cambodian Rock Band, Mother Russia) Performances run May 27-31 at The Chain Theatre on West 36th Street.
Funny, sharp, and unsettling, Hookman follows Lexi, a college student trying to rebuild her life after surviving a violent attack. But as campus legends, horror movie tropes, and unresolved trauma begin to blur together, she finds herself trapped in a world where fear becomes impossible to escape. Part slasher film, part dark comedy, the play skewers the stories we tell ourselves about danger while asking who gets believed and who gets left behind.
The production embraces a stripped-down, punchy approach that places the audience directly inside the tension of the piece. Performed in an intimate setting with a cast of emerging artists, this staging leans into the play's theatricality, quick shifts, and creeping sense of paranoia.
A blood-soaked, razor-sharp "existential slasher comedy" about grief, guilt, and the terrifying ordeal of growing up. Freshman year is hard. Your roommate is weird. You're homesick. And a hook-handed serial killer may or may not be lurking in the backseat. As Lexi tries to untangle what really happened the night her Best Friend died, reality fractures into flashbacks, dorm-room debates, digital overload, and deliciously gruesome horror satire.
Hookman skewers teen speak, campus politics, and our culture of distraction-while digging into something much darker: responsibility, complicity, and what it means to become an adult in the 21st century. Is the Hookman real? Is grief the real killer? Pay attention to the clues.
Part slasher flick, part coming-of-age fever dream, Hookman sets the tone for Bold Proposal's first season.
The cast features Maurie Moore*, Madelyn Guyet*, Charlotte B. Um, Nicolette Rose Mango, Nallely Pineda-Turcios, and Keith Robinson*.
