As reported by The Daily Mail, Birdsong, the best-selling novel that later spawned a stage adaptation, will make its big screen debut soon. Set to star in the film are Tony Award-winner Eddie Redmayne and Clemence Poesy, playing lovers in a secret affair against the backdrop of World War I.

In September 2010 a stage version by Rachel Wagstaff, directed by Trevor Nunn, opened at the Comedy Theatre, London running until January 2011; Sebastian Faulks's original 1993 novel is one of Britain's best-loved books. It has sold more than two million copies in the United Kingdom and more than three million worldwide; and still regularly appears in the best-seller lists.

Eddie Redmayne took home a 2010 Tony Award for his performance in Red. He has previously acted in Now or Later (Royal Court), The Goat (Almeida/Apollo) Master Harold & the Boys (Liverpool Everyman), Twelfth Night (Shakespeare's Globe at the Middle Temple Hall), in films such as "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "The Good Shepherd" and in televisions shows such as "Elizabeth I."

Clemence Poesy is known for roles as Fleur Delacour in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", as well as films such as "In Bruges", and "127 Hours". She is also known for her short role on Gossip Girl.

Though a start date for the film has yet to be set, in the mean time Redmayne and Poesy are reportedly both appearing in different versions of Richard II - Redmayne as the title character in the Donmar production, and Poesy as Queen Isabella in an upcoming film adaptation.
