This week we are excited to feature Michael Patrick Walker, composer of the popular musical Altar Boyz, and his song "Someday." 13's Al Calderon, who recently appeared on The X Factor, sang this song at our concert at NYMF.

We caught up with Michael and asked him about his inspiration for writing this song. Here's what he had to say:

"The song "Someday" has always been one of my favorite trunk songs and I couldn't be happier that it is finding a life of its own! I wish I could say that I don't relate at all to the character in the song, but, like a lot of theatre kids, I had a decent amount of experience being picked on. While there are many ways to write a song about that experience, I didn't want to write a "victim" song so I went, outwardly at least, the other direction. In my mind, the entire song happens in the character's mind as he's being given a swirlie (having your head dunked into a toilet which is then flushed - a pleasure I never had personally, but it happens!) so he uses the humiliating moment to consider...everything. The advice that got him here, what went wrong and what he'll do to make it right when he can. I'm very proud of the resulting song because, while I hope it's fun and funny, it's also pretty layered and you learn a lot about the character - something really useful in what is now a stand-alone song. So here's to rocking out and getting through those moments we wish were already over!"

Michael Patrick Walker is an award-winning composer/lyricist who The New York Times hailed as "a skilled songwriter" and The Huffington Post dubbed one of today's "must-know songwriters." His songs have been performed and recorded by a diverse group of artists including Chita Rivera, Kelli O'Hara, Cheyenne Jackson, Ana Gasteyer and many more. With collaborators Gary Adler and Kevin Del Aguila, Michael is perhaps best known as one of the creators of the smash-hit musical, ALTAR BOYZ (Outer Critics Circle Award Winner, Best Off Broadway Musical) for which he received multiple Drama Desk nominations including Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics. His newest musical, DOG AND PONY (with book writer Rick Elice) will have its world premiere as part of The Old Globe Theatre's 2013-2014 season. Other theatrical writing projects include: the original musicals LAND OF DREAMS (with book writer/lyricist Brian Crawley) and BEING THEO as well as a song cycle based on Michael's debut album OUT OF CONTEXT (Yellow Sound Label). Beyond the world of theatre, his songs can be heard on the Disney Channel's JOHNNY AND THE SPRITES and Nick JR's OLIVIA, and he composed the Rockette dance number HUMBUGGED! for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Recordings include: OUT OF CONTEXT: THE SONGS OF Michael Patrick Walker (co-producer), the ALTAR BOYZ cast album, the JOHNNY AND THE SPRITES album (co-producer) and several editions of BC/EFA's CAROLS FOR A CURE. Michael is a proud graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. www.michaelpatrickwalker.com.
