BWW Blog: Meet Texas High School Student, Kaci Pelias

Hey there fellow theatre fans! My name is Kaci, and I welcome you to my little blog series focusing on theatre communities and acting from a Texas perspective. I am a high school student currently working on Hamilton.

Okay, maybe not (but imagine). I'm actually in a play by Qui Nguyen that my friend is directing: She Kills Monsters. This show is about an average girl whose nerdy little sister passes away, leaving her an adventurous Dungeons and Dragons game that ultimately gives her closure. It's a very fun show and our rehearsal process is a blast, though definitely not the most conventional.

For one, the show will open in June in a children's theatre, however, the theatre charges by the hour for its use, and for a teen without a job, rehearsing there would be very expensive. So we rehearse in our director's driveway after school when it is very warm outside. But at least I can tan for once, a concept that's new to me and my Great White Way skin.

It's also very interesting to work on a show involving some of your closest friends and directed by your friend as well, all without adult supervision. We can get distracted very easily, especially when we are offstage (or off-driveway I suppose). Between the girl who sprays our lead with the water gun she found in the garage, to myself and my skateboarding attempts in the alley, it's a miracle we make any progress.

Surprisingly, however, the show is coming along very nicely. We have blocked every scene besides an epic dance battle, paper-mached some dragon heads, and had fun along the way. By June, I'm sure our little production will be just as good as Hamilton.

Alright, Hamilton may be slightly better.
