In just a little over three weeks since taking over the former Champs Shoe Store at the South Street Seaport, the Algonquin Seaport Theater opens for business this April 1st. Located on the second floor of the mall at 89 South Street, overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge, the theater will feature live music for the first year of its existence while raising funds for a 200 seat Off Broadway.

The plan is to feature a different style of music for each day of the week, keeping it consistent so the patrons in the lower east side will know what to expect when they come to the theater. Tuesday is for Acoustic Singer/Songwriters; Wednesday is for Cabaret; Thursday is for Jazz; Friday is Karaoke, Saturday is Rock and Sunday is Bluegrass.

Among the acts scheduled to perform at the Algonquin Seaport Theater in April/May are Josephine Ancelle, Nick Ciavatta, Leaf Pile, Emily Grove, Barefoot Tramps, Kelli Maguire, Bertilla Baker, Kari Swenson Riely, bluegrass group NYCity Slickers, jazz vocalist Marcus Goldhaber, guitarist Seth Foster and more.

Shows start at 7pm and there is a $10 cover charge, no drink minimum.

In addition to live music, every Saturday and Sunday the world renownEd Galli Theater will be presenting children's theater at 2pm. In April they perform their unique spin on the classic tale "Cinderella".

Starting April 12th, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 1pm, Ron Crawford brings his critically acclaimed one man show to the theater in "An Afternoon with Mark Twain".

The goal is to provide the Seaport and the Battery Park area with live entertainment on a consistent basis. Eventually, Algonquin is looking to raise enough money to do Off Broadway productions at the site.

Algonquin Theater is best known for their productions of the long running Off Broadway musicals "Sessions" and "An Evening at the Carlyle" as well as their stellar production of Shel Silverstein's "The Devil and Billy Markham".
