Actor and political activist Corin Redgrave was rushed to a Basildon hospital after suffering a heart attack; he is currently in critical but stable condition.

The 65-year old actor was campaigning for a traveller's site in Basildon, Essex when he was stricken with the attack on June 8th.  Police officers (who were in attendance to prevent public disorder) restarted Redgrave's heart before taking him to the hospital, where his wife, actress Kika Markham, sits with him.

Redgrave, an outspoken opponent against the war in Iraq, had been defending the land rights of Gypsies among other travellers.  He controversially told a British correspondent that Iraq is "a far more culturally rich and civilized society than America is."

Redgrave, a member of the fabled acting dynasty, is the son of actor Michael Redgrave and actress Rachel Kempson; Vanessa and Lynn are his sisters, and Jemma his daughter.  Most recently, the London-based thespian starred in King Lear and Tynan for the RSC, and Pericles at Shakespeare's Globe.
