Mountain Road Banner Walk And Reception Announced, 6/9

By:

On June 9th, Mountain Road will come alive with contemporary artwork that celebrates the history of Albuquerque's oldest road and its adjacent neighborhoods, with the opening of the historic "Banner Walk."

View an installation of banners mounted on lamp posts between 5th St. and 12th St. on Mountain Road. Each original art work highlights a piece of history.

Use your smart phone to enjoy a curated narration of A Visual History of Mountain Road as you walk. (www.friendsofmountainroad.com). After your "Banner Walk" join the conversation about our neighborhood's far-reaching history at the reception. Saturday, June 9th, Noon to 4PM, 1201 8th St. NW, (the northwest corner of 8th and Mountain).

"History of the Neighborhood Through the Eyes of Contemporary Artists" is a Public Art Project funded in part by the City of Albuquerque and the Wells Park Neighborhood Association. "It has always been a dream of mine to bring the history of our road to life, making it possible for all of our visitors to see!" says Julianna Kirwin, project organizer. At the reception, the original works will be shown with many of the artists in attendance. A Visual History of Mountain Road

Ever wonder how "Mountain" Road got its name? Who were some of the first merchants in Albuquerque? What role did the Germans, Italians, Jews, and the Moors play in the development of our city? Where did the old acequias run and are their remnants still visible? Come see how contemporary artists currently living and working in NM answer these questions.

A big thank you to Emma Moya, whose archive was fundamental to the project; thanks to each of the artists who spent time researching local history, and thanks to all of our sponsors for the project (below) and the collaborating team who juried and lent their expertise to the technical aspects of the exhibit.

Isaac Benton, City Councilman and Javier Martinez, City Representative Dist 2, Reincarnation/The Subaru Guys, The Golden Crown Panaderia, WIRED, Mountain Road Fine Furniture, Brent Lomako, The Next Best Thing to Being There, MGP Mechanical.
