BWW Previews: TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT at West End Productions

By:

West End Production's 2019 season kicks off on February 22nd with "TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT", which is Scottish playwright Giles Havergal's adaptation of Graham Greene's novel. This touching comedic drama revolves around the odyssey of a retired bank manager who reunites with his seventy-five-year-old aunt at his mother's cremation. Their encounter leads to a considerable change in his life and transforms his dull life into one filled with excitement. The cast of the play consists of a cast of four actors - Kenneth Ansloan, Tim Crofton, Tim MacAlpine, and Harry Zimmerman - playing every one of the characters, sometimes simultaneously! The four actors are onstage in identical costumes of a black suit with a black bowler hat, and a red carnation in their jacket button-hole as they sit facing the audience. This helps to turn the production from "stylistic economy into stylistic statement."

Cy and Jane Hoffman, who have presented a multitude of musicals and plays to Albuquerque audiences, including "Laughter on the 23rdFloor", Lucky Stuff", "No Way to Treat a Lady", and "My Favorite Year", are the directors of this production. They chose to direct this play because they read "TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT" a few years ago and "loved its off-beat quality of seemingly quiet, conservative people who wind up in situations involving great risk and adventure." Along with a love of the play itself, Cy was drawn to the production due to the challenge of the cast of four actors portraying twenty-three roles. He stated that "we are still not quite sure how to direct some parts of the play, but that's what makes it fun; we will figure it out during rehearsals and in collaboration with the actors. This should be an adventure for the audience too!"

"TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT" runs from February 22nd- March 17that the North 4th Art Center at 4904 4th ST NW. Productions are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, and Sunday matinees at 2 PM.
