Star Spangled Girl at Arena Dinner Theatre
Any actor worth their salt will tell you that every great play begins with the words on the page. Because of the worlds that playwrights (and Librettists) create, many people, even more than actors, have jobs inside and outside of the theater. So any chance to talk to a young playwright as delightful and talented as Chicago-based playwright, Philip Dawkins, I will take. His current opus, The Gentleman Caller is currently in rehearsals to make its New York debut at Cherry Lane Theater, as it coincides with its simultaneous World Premiere production, still running at Chicago's The Raven Theater, through May 27, 2018.
One of Neil Simon's more obscure plays this poignant, hilarious, and breezily nostalgic take on the sexual & political divides erupting in the 1960s, The Star-Spangled Girl is the perfect post-Valentine's Day apertif (or antidote?!).

Mad Cat Theatre Company unleashes its 15th season with the politically charged romantic comedy The Star-Spangled Girl by Neil Simon. An unlikely fit at first glance, this 1966 piece depicts a country polarized after the hangover of the hippie generation's summer of love. Now, re-examined by Mad Cat, the play will be deconstructed to take place in 2066, with temperatures rising and political tensions mounting; the action underscored by narration and live music.

Anecdotes involving audience celebrity sightings included Barbara Streisand (by Stevens), Milton Berle (by Van Orden), Jack Jones and his thighs (by Lee) and a mob king who struck her while performing (by Kazan).
