Amadeus – the dazzling story of the tortuous rivalry between world-renowned composers Mozart and Salieri – returns to the screen as part of the Royal Albert Hall’s Films in Concert series, accompanied by a live performance of the score by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields orchestra and London Philharmonic Choir.

Often referred to as ‘the most acclaimed film ever made about classical music’, Amadeus (1984) is a sumptuous period epic and a glorious celebration of astonishing musical achievement.

Directed by Miloš Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and written by Sir Peter Shaffer, the film tells the story of vindictive composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), who is consumed by jealousy for his rival, the petulant genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce). Waging war against Mozart – and God, who he believes is speaking through the giggling youngster – he hatches a complex scheme for cruel and absolute revenge.

October 26, 2023 “There are simply too many notes, that's all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect.” Peter Shaffer’s irreverent, yet at times poignant and thought-provoking, take on the relationship between Mozart and Salieri began life as a National Theatre production – its big screen adaptation garnered accolades following its 1984 release, and retains its popularity almost 40 years later.

December 15, 2018 What a bizarre year 2018 has been. In the months that saw too much Trump, devastating Californian wildfires, an escalation in the refugee crisis, not to mention the dreaded 'B' word, it makes me more grateful than ever for the pure escapism that live theatre so often provides.
