Photo Flash: Broadway Producers Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comely Bring TOP HAT Olivier Back to US
Top Hat won three 2013 Laurence Olivier awards for Best New Musical, Best Choreography (Bill Deamer), and Best Costume design (Jon Morrell) at the ceremony held on April 28. Bringing the prestigious statuette back to the US are Broadway producers Stewart F. Lane, Ted Hartley and Bonnie Comley. Scroll down for a photo of the producers with their award!
The musical was nominated for seven Oliviers including, Best Actor in a Musical (Tom Chambers), Best Actress in a Musical (Summer Strallen), Best Set Design (Hildegard Bechtler) and Best Sound Design (Gareth Owen).
Top Hat brings the glamour of Hollywood's golden age and the glorious, tap-dancing magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to the West End in one of the greatest dance musicals of all time. Packed full of Irving Berlin's greatest hits including, Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie & Tails, Let's Face the Music & Dance and Puttin' on the Ritz, TOP HAT is an exhilarating celebration of 1930s song and dance. The show, directed by Matthew White, currently stars Tony and Olivier award nominated Gavin Lee and Broadway leading lady Kristen Beth Williams star as Jerry Travers and Dale Tremont.
Top Hat the movie was made by RKO Radio Pictures in 1935 and is widely regarded as the greatest of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance musicals. For RKO, it was also their most profitable costing $620,000 to make and taking $3 million (approximately equivalent to $47m today) on its initial release making it RKO's biggest earner of the 30's. Ted Hartley, the current CEO of RKO Pictures is eager to bring Top Hat to Broadway although no dates have been announced.
