Sarah Waters' 1998 novel TIPPING THE VELVET is headed to the stage.

Newcomer Sally Messham will star as 'Nan', described as an "innocent young woman from Whitstable in Kent whose dewy eyes are opened wide when she sees male impersonator Kitty Butler on stage." The story is set in Victorian England during the 1890s.

Butler will be played by THE 39 STEPS and BAD GIRLS: THE MUSICAL's Laura Rogers when the show debuts at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, beginning tonight, September 18, 2015.

TIPPING THE VELVET is a co-production with the Royal Lyceum Theatre of Edinburgh, directed by Lyndsey Turner and Laura Wade.

Choreography is by Alistair David, who just did the dances for Open Air Theatre's SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS at Regent's Park.

This is the first stage outing for TIPPING THE VELVET, which was seen on the small screen in 2002, starring Keeley Hawes and Rachael Stirling.
