National Theatre Live to Broadcast West End's WAR HORSE, Rob Ashford & Kenneth Branagh's MACBETH & More in 2013-14 Season

National Theatre Live is pleased to announce that the June 13 live broadcast of Peter Morgan's Olivier Award-winning new play The Audience was seen by nearly 30,000 people in North America and nearly 80,000 people in the UK - the largest audience ever for a live broadcast from National Theatre Live. Due to the record-breaking response to The National Theatre Live broadcast of The Audience, many encore screenings have already been added, and more encores will be added throughout the summer internationally. In North America, there are currently 700 screenings scheduled throughout the summer, with additional encores to be added still; in the UK, nearly 800 screenings will take place - the largest number of screenings for a National Theatre Live broadcast in both North America and the UK ever. The Audience played its final performance at London's Gielgud Theatre on June 15, starring internationally acclaimed actress Helen Mirren as The Queen, directed by Stephen Daldry, and won two 2013 Olivier Awards for Best Actress (Helen Mirren) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Richard McCabe).

In 2013-2014, the fifth season of The National Theatre Live series, audiences can look forward to a wider variety than ever of productions and special events from the National's stages and beyond. The National's critically-acclaimed new production of Shakespeare's Othello, directed by Nicholas Hytner, will be broadcast live September 26, 2013; the Manchester International Festival's production of Macbeth, with Kenneth Branagh in the title role, directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, will be broadcast live in the UK on July 20, 2013, and broadcast internationally on October 17, 2013; a star-studded 50thAnniversary celebration of The National Theatre will be broadcast live from the National on November 2, 2013; the Donmar Warehouse's production of Shakespeare's Coriolanus, directed by Josie Rourke, will be broadcast live on January 30, 2014; and the National's internationally acclaimed production of War Horse, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, adapted by Nick Stafford, and directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris in association with Handspring Puppet Company, will be broadcast live from the West End for the first time ever in 2014, with specific dates to be announced at a later time. All broadcasts will have multiple encore screenings following the live dates.

National Theatre Live is an initiative by The National Theatre of Great Britain to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world. Since its first season, which began in June 2009 with the acclaimed production of Phédre starring Helen Mirren, over 1.5 million people have now experienced the work of National Theatre Live on movie screens worldwide. In addition to the record-breaking broadcast of The Audience starring Helen Mirren as The Queen (winner of two 2013 Olivier Awards, including the Best Actress award for Mirren), this past season included the theatrical adaptation of Mark Haddon's award-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (winner of seven 2013 Olivier Awards, including Master Card Best New Play); Steven Beresford's acclaimed new comedy The Last of the Haussmans; a new production of Shakespeare's Timon of Athens starring Simon Russell Beale in the title role; Arthur Wing Pinero's The Magistrate starring John Lithgow in the title role; Alan Bennett's new comedy People starring Frances de la Tour; and James Graham's acclaimed new play This House.

OTHELLO, by William Shakespeare, directed by Nicholas Hytner

The National Theatre presents a major new production of William Shakespeare's celebrated play about the destructive power of jealousy. Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Lester (Henry V at The National Theatre, BBC's Hustle) takes the title role.

Playing opposite him as the duplicitous Iago is fellow Olivier Award winner Rory Kinnear (The Last of the Haussmans, James Bond: Skyfall), who is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner (Timon of Athens, One Man, Two Guvnors) following their acclaimed collaboration on The National Theatre's recent production of Hamlet.

Othello, newly married to Desdemona - who is half his age - is appointed leader of a major military operation. Iago, passed over for promotion by Othello in favor of the young Cassio, persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair.

Manchester International Festival's production of Shakespeare's MACBETH, directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh returns to the stage for his first Shakespearean role in over a decade, taking the title role in Manchester International Festival's production ofMACBETH, with Alex Kingston ("Dr. Who," "ER") as Lady Macbeth. Directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, this tragic tale of ambition and treachery unfolds within the walls of an intimate deconsecrated Manchester Church.

MACBETH from Manchester International Festival marks National Theatre Live's first festival partnership and fourth broadcast from outside The National Theatre. This production of MACBETH is commissioned and produced by Manchester International Festival, where it will play July 5 - 21, 2013.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, The National Theatre presents a once-in-a-lifetime performance, broadcast to cinemas around the world.

From its early golden period under the leadership of Laurence Olivier at The Old Vic Theatre to its now iconic building in the heart of London, The National Theatre has been home to Britain's finest theatrical talent, premiering works by renowned writers such as Harold Pinter, Peter Shaffer, Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett and David Hare, and staging celebrated performances by Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, Michael Gambon and the rising stars of today.

From Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead to The History Boys, from The Mysteries to Angels in America, from Guys and Dolls to War Horse - Nicholas Hytner directs a thrilling evening of live theatre, with rare glimpses from the archive, featuring many of the original actors who have performed on the National's stages over the past five decades.

Donmar Warehouse's production of Shakespeare's CORIOLANUS, directed by Josie Rourke

National Theatre Live will broadcast the Donmar Warehouse's production of CORIOLANUS, Shakespeare's searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, with Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse (film), BBC's The Hollow Crown) in the title role and Mark Gatiss (Season's Greetings at The National Theatre, BBC's Sherlock) as Menenius, directed by the Donmar's Artistic Director Josie Rourke.

When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens' hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

National Theatre Live will broadcast the internationally beloved play War Horse live from London's West End to cinemas around the world in 2014.

Since its first performance at The National Theatre in 2007, War Horse has become an international phenomenon, seen by over 3.7 million people world-wide and receiving numerous awards, including two Olivier Awards in London, six Tony Awards in New York and three Dora Awards in Toronto.

Based on Michael Morpurgo's novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, with direction by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

War Horse is currently in its sixth year in London, with conCurrent Productions running in Australia (Sydney and soon Brisbane) and is on a major tour of North America which continues through 2014.
