Hi Siobhan. Tell us a bit about the show and your character.

It's a loving spoof on the old 1920s Broadway musicals with improbable situations (too many to mention) - "mix-up, mayhem and a gay wedding" and I play the Chaperone, a huge Broadway legend whose star is beginning to fade, accelerated by vast amounts of alcohol, but can still belt out those anthems to anyone who'll listen.

What's the dynamic like in the company?

It's an ensemble piece. Everyone in the company has their own unique character with their own scenes and songs, so it's a happy company.

Drowsy famously had a rather truncated run in the West End - why do you think that might have been? Is it better suited to a smaller venue?

I don't think it helped that the recession had just started. Truly original pieces like this need masses of publicity which is very expensive. So word of mouth is really important. Yes, I think it suits smaller venues as you really feel you are in his living room with the man and so much more connected with his experience.

We saw you most recently in the West End in Hairspray - was it fun to play the baddie Mrs Von Tussle for once?

Definitely, it's a marvellous way to release your inner angst, plus I did get to wear her sensational outfits and hairpieces!

Has Elaine [Elaine Paige, the West End's original chaperone] given you any words of wisdom?

It's not something I've ever asked her.

What attracts you to a certain role? And more specifically the Drowsy Chaperone?

Interesting character first and great music. I like to know I can bring something special to a song. With Drowsy it was because she was so dramatic and had a very funny song to sing with a great rousing ending, which always helps. Plus it only ran for two hours including an interval...perfect.

The Drowsy Chaperone is running Upstairs at the Gatehouse from tonight.
