On Monday, March 16 at 7:30 pm, the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series brings Polish poet Adam Zagajewski for Mother Tongue: Poetry in Translation, a bilingual reading with his noted translator, poet Clare Cavanagh, and poet Edward Hirsch moderating the post-reading conversation. Mary Oliver once called Adam Zagajewski "our greatest and truest representative, the most pertinent, impressive, meaningful poet of our time." Zagajewski is a poet, novelist, and essayist. His books of poetry include Tremor, Canvas, Mysticism for Beginners, Without End, Two Cities, Another Beauty, and A Defense of Ardor. Zagajewski divides his time between Chicago, Paris, and Krakow. Clare Cavanagh has translated number of volumes of Polish poetry and prose, particularly the work of Wislawa Szymborska. She is a professor of Slavic languages and literatures at Northwestern University.

Moderator Edward Hirsch is a celebrated poet and noted advocate for poetry. He served as the 2008 Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. His most recent book Gabriel explores grief and the death of his son. The book was longlisted for the 2014 National Book Award.

About The O.B. Hardison Poetry Series - The O.B. Hardison Poetry Series, one of the nation's most established poetry reading programs, is noted for featuring an extensive range of outstanding poets. The series was founded in 1970 when the late O.B. Hardison, Jr., a renowned teacher, scholar, and poet, became director of the Folger Shakespeare Library and established many outreach programs to make the resources of the extraordinary research library available to the Washington community. Major funding for the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series is provided by the Lannan Foundation, which sponsors readings at the Folger and at Georgetown University, as well as a collaborative undergraduate learning program with the Lannan Fellows.
