NEW YORK’S ATHENA THEATRE BRINGS MARYLAND PLAYWRIGHT TOM BLOCK’S SUB-BASEMENT TO SILVER SPRING

Highwood Theatre, 914 Silver Spring Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910

June 1-18; Thurs-Sat, 8 pm; Sunday 3 pm

An absurdist comedy exploring the importance of art, the overlooked wisdom of the homeless, and a journey to finding one's own path.

Silver Spring Playwright Tom Block returns to the area from New York with his play Sub-Basement, produced by New York’s Athena Theatre.  Block, who began his playwriting career here five years ago with his productions of White Noise (June 2012, The Fridge, DC) and Butterfly (February 2013, Takoma Park Community Center Theater, MD), has spent the last four years honing his craft in New York at such venues as Urban Stages, Ensemble Studio Theater, HERE Arts Center, Theater for the New City, IRT Theater, Dixon Place, Theater at the 14th Street Y, Kraine Theater, Athena Theatre Company, Emerging Artists Theater, Theater Row, A.R.T.-NY, Player’s Theatre, Drama League, Dramatists Guild Mary Rodgers Room, Hudson Guild Theater, Secret Theatre and many others.

Sub-Basement follows Adrienne, a former poet, now Royal Canadian Mounted Police trainee, on an absurdist-DADA odyssey to find her true purpose amidst the dark corners of New York City, the depths of the Drama Book Shop, and her muddled past. Her voyage is guided by two homeless people, Gustav (a one-time climatologist) and Cleménce (an erstwhile poet), all while being pursued by Simon, a lawyer who she met on the Internet, and who offers her a gateway to a normal life.  Are we ever free of the disappointments of the past, and can we escape the expectation of our parents? Join on a voyage deep into the sub-basement of Adrienne’s psyche — and try to discover what’s genuinely important in life.

Directed by Suzanne Karpsinksi.  Starring Veronique Ory, Jashiel Valerio, Lydia Darly and Ray Bergen.  Stage Manager: Kat Turkalo.

Paintings created by Playwright and Painter Tom Block specifically for the set were supported by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, MD.
