In this special Philharmonia at the Movies: Sci-Fi concert at The Marlowe Theatre (Friday 21 November 2014, 7.30pm), the Philharmonia presents a programme of celebrated themes from some of cinema's most popular science-fiction movies.

The evening will be hosted by film critic and national treasure Barry Norman, who will introduce the pieces and guide the audience through the music. His career spans over 50 years writing for newspaper columns and presenting flagship BBC and ITV documentaries and programmes. His most notable achievement was being the regular presenter of the BBC Film programme, starting in 1972 with Film 72, which he continued to present until 1998. It was through this that his name became known in households throughout the UK.

Philharmonia at the Movies: Sci-Fi spans the decades of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) right up to Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). It features music from some of the great film composers including John Williams (Star Wars, E.T.) and Hans Zimmer (Inception).

After its London date on Wednesday 15 October, Philharmonia at the Movies: Sci-Fi will be touring the country with Barry Norman to The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury on 21 November, to Leicester on 30 November, Bedford on 2 December and finally, Basingstoke on 24 May.

The programme will also include music from: E.T., Star Wars, Things to Come, You Only Live Twice, The Black Hole, Back to the Future, Predator, Deep Impact, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, and more

It is conducted by James Shearman, a prolific film score conductor and orchestrator who has gained worldwide recognition for his work on the Academy Award-winning Shakespeare in Love (1998), and Hollywood blockbusters such as Thor (2011) and Pixar's Brave (2012). James regularly conducts the Philharmonia in the recording studio, but is particularly delighted to be making his concert debut with the Orchestra for Philharmonia at the Movies: Sci-Fi.
