Two of the most distinct and idiosyncratic voices in American independent cinema, the Austin-based filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner, will be the subjects of a retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image, Kumiko and the Zellner Bros., from February 28 through March 5, 2015. The brothers will appear in person on Thursday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m., with a preview screening of their latest film, the Sundance favorite, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter. The retrospective will also include their early features Frontier, Goliath, and Kid-Thing, and a compilation of their short films in the program Zellernoids! Short Film Cavalcade. (more...)

The New York Philharmonic, in collaboration with CAMI Music, will celebrate the Chinese New Year for the fourth consecutive year, this time welcoming the Year of the Sheep with a program of Chinese composers, musicians, and traditional instruments, celebrating the cultural heritage of China and honoring the Chinese-American community, tonight, February 24, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. Long Yu - music director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, artistic director and chief conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra, artistic director of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, and founding artistic director of the Beijing Music Festival - will return to the Philharmonic following his January subscription debut to conduct the Chinese New Year Concert for the fourth consecutive season. Emily Johnson/Catalyst brings its expansive installation SHORE to Lenapehoking (New York City). SHORE is the third part of a trilogy exploring the complex terrain of identity, memory, ancestry, land, and community. Building on these themes, SHORE brings ideas and questions that emerged in the first two works -- the Bessie Award-winning The Thank-you Bar (2011) and the richly layered Niicugni (2013) -- out into the world. Throughout the trilogy, Johnson has asked: How can performance uniquely connect us to our land, our lives, and each other? SHORE's gatherings and events will take place at various locations April 19-26, with performances at New York Live Arts April 23-25. (more...)

Carnegie Hall presents a rare performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen's powerful and influential 1968 modern vocal work Stimmung by the ensemble Theatre of Voices in Zankel Hall tonight, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. Theatre of Voices-comprised of singers Else Torp, Louise Skovbaech, Randi Pontoppidan, Wolodymyr Smishkewych, Chris Watson, and Jakob Bloch Jespersen-perform Stockhausen's seminal work for six amplified voices, the first major Western piece of music to utilize overtone singing, in which the note being sung is manipulated by the singer to produce more than one pitch at once. The technique is commonly found in Eastern singing styles, such as Mongolian and Tuvan throat singing. (more...)
