TAKE FIVE - The Dave Brubeck Story recreates the world of iconic jazz musician Dave Brubeck, his genius, his relationships, his humanity and popular acclaim.

This remarkable show combines the music of Dave Brubeck's famous jazz quartet of the 1950s and 60s with a slideshow featuring images from Brubeck's life and times.

In 1959, Dave Brubeck Quartet's album, Time Out became the first platinum jazz recording while Take Five remains the highest-selling jazz instrumental of all time. Together with Blue Rondo a la Turk, these works are identified as seminal and revolutionary expressions of a new era in music.

First performed at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe Festival, The Brendan Fitzgerald Quartet performs Brubeck's music authentically and with their own interpretative touch.

Fitzgerald narrates Brubeck's story at the piano and channels Jimmy Lyons, a jazz radio presenter who helped launch Dave's career. Andy Firth plays the elegant music of saxophonist Paul Desmond, Brubeck's creative ally and sometime adversary, with Satomi Ohnishi on drums and Quinton Dunne on double bass.

The music and narrative is supported by a projected montage of images from Brubeck's life and times, blended with live vision of the musicians using VJ technology.

This unique production revisits a time just prior to the emergence of rock and roll, when cool jazz was the predominant form of pop music played in cafes and juke boxes.

"It is the type of show that gives us the best of both worlds, taking us back to a time when music was sophisticated, allowing us to relive the moment in the present." Glam Adelaide
