Urinetown literally means a ‘pee town’. Set at a fictitious town suffering from lack of water, poor people in the village confront against the monopolistic company seeking to take advantage of exclusive rights to paid restroom, which gradually reaches at the level of a chaotic uprising.
Although it struggled to be performed even on Off-Broadway after being rejected several times due to its tabooish title and shocking contents at first, the musical, ?Urinetown? has been met with critical acclamations for its pleasant development of plots despite seriousness of the theme and the freshness of the subject, and has been finally able to get on Broadway. In 2002, it was nominated for 10 Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Director, Best Script, and Best Choreography, and so on, and won three major Tony awards for Best Director, Best Script, and Original Scores over an intensive competition with many outstanding works. The musical, ?Urinetown? has been performed 965 times on Broadway for four years, and continued to travel all over the world for three years, and was revived at London’s Westend in 2014 to become a great hit until recently. When the musical was premiered in Korea in 2002, ?Urinetown? received acclamations that it can stand comparison with the original musical on Broadway from Greg Kotis, the author of the musical, and Mark Hollmann, the composer, who, then, visited to Korea to watch the performance, and by winning Best Foreign Musical Award at the Korean Musical Award in 2003, its production quality was acknowledged even in Korea. Having been acclaimed as such from both critics and audiences, the musical ?Urinetown? continued to be performed in 2003 and 2005. And in 2015, in ten years, the musical has returned with a more upgraded cast.
