A man captured by an illusion called love And his lover ‘butterfly’ created by his desire to love In Beijing China, in 1964, Rene Gallimard, a civil servant attached to the French Embassy in China is fascinated by the elegance of Song Liling, a beautiful Chinese opera diva of Madame Butterfly. He irresistibly falls in love with her and realizes his masculinity as he repeats encounters with her. At some point, Rene becomes convicted of treason in return for love with Song sacrificing everything he has owned.
