Electric City Playhouse & Foothills Writers Guild Collaborate on New Playwrights Group

In the downstairs banquet room at Victoria Tea Room at noon on Friday, October 22nd, the Foothills Playwrights Group will formally launch as a New Group for play and skit writers. The event will be hosted by the FWG President Jim Rasheed, with remarks by ECP Executive Director Brian Hamilton, ECP Board President Beth Cribbe, Former FWG President and current ECP Vice President Jay Wright and will feature the award-winning playwright Kelley Kingston-Strayer, whose play "A Southern Exposure" won the Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative "New Voice Series." Kingston-Strayer placed third in the 2009 Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights, her short fiction has won several awards and she has appeared in publications ranging from major newspapers to literary reviews. Her novel, "Venus Moose and the Rhinestone Miracle" was a finalist in the 2008 Ohio Arts Council "Governors Award for Individual Excellence." Her presentation will be "Playwriting Overview - Concept to Production" and her play, "A Southern Exposure," will be performed at ECP in August of 2011.

The future meetings of the Foothills Playwrights Group will take place at the Electric City Playhouse, who will stage a selection produced by The New Group each year to help encourage and foster the playwriting community in Anderson. The New Group is to be headed by the Electric City Playhouse's Resident Playwright, Jim Rasheed. Rasheed has won Brandeis University's Herbert and Beigel New Play Premiere and the 2000-2001 Harold and Mimi Steinberg Prize for Best Original Play. His play, Professional Skepticism was published in "New Playwrights: The Best Plays Of 2002" and will be performed in December of 2010 at ECP.
